Restless Knights
The Halloween Movie Watch List - #5 - THE FRIGHTENERSOriginally supposed to be a segment on HBO’s Tales from the Crypt. Robert Zemeckis liked the script so much that he pushed studios to make it into a feature film, and so Peter Jackson (whom had wowed audiences with Heavenly Creatures the year before) took to the Director’s chair and created one seriously awesome film. That is seemingly tailor-made, for the Halloween season. With memorable performances from Michael J. Fox, Jake Busey, and Dee Wallace. It is a legendary character actor named Jeffrey Combs, that steals the movie. Combs delved deep into the psyche of his character, Milton Dammers and suggested among other things. That Dammers have a Hitler-like hair style and even designed the two main chest tattoos that are revealed late in the movie. This was also a shining moment for Jackson’s Weta Digital Ltd. Which designed and created cutting-edge and revolutionary techniques for the CGI used in the movie. When you look at Jackson’s filmography, The Frighteners is a major turning point in his career. Early in his history of course he made films like Bad Taste (which is #15 on this list) and Dead Alive. The Frighteners cemented Jackson as a mainstay in Hollywood and proved that a CGI-heavy movie can tell a damn good story and thoroughly entertain.
